Delta sleep-inducing peptide, also known as DSIP or emideltide, is a nine-amino-acid peptide first associated with sleep-promoting activity in early experimental work. Researchers subsequently examined its possible relationship with sleep architecture, electroencephalographic patterns, stress signaling, pain response, and several neuroendocrine systems.
The DSIP evidence base is unusual and should be described cautiously. Small older human studies reported changes in selected sleep measurements, but results across studies and models have not been consistently reproduced. Its receptor, endogenous biological role, and primary mechanism of action remain unresolved. The name “delta sleep-inducing peptide” therefore describes its research history and does not establish that the material reliably induces sleep.
FDA’s recent evaluation identified inadequate evidence of effectiveness and insufficient safety information for proposed compounded uses, including no safety information for certain routes of administration.
