SS-31, also known in scientific literature as elamipretide, is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide designed for research involving mitochondrial function. In simple terms, it is studied for how it interacts with the inner mitochondrial membrane—the structure where cells generate much of their usable energy.
The peptide has an alternating aromatic-cationic structure and is reported to associate with cardiolipin, a phospholipid concentrated in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This interaction has been investigated for its potential influence on cristae organization, electron-transport-chain function, ATP-production efficiency, and the formation of reactive oxygen species.
