MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Unlike many signaling peptides produced from nuclear DNA, MOTS-C originates from a small open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Researchers study it as a messenger that may help mitochondria communicate with the rest of the cell when energy demands or cellular stress change.
Preclinical research has linked MOTS-C with the folate–AICAR–AMPK pathway. AMPK acts as a cellular energy sensor, helping cells respond when available energy is low.
