Glutathione is a three-amino-acid molecule composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is one of the cell’s most important low-molecular-weight thiols and is widely used in laboratory research examining oxidative stress, redox signaling, detoxification, and cellular homeostasis.
Reduced glutathione, abbreviated GSH, can donate reducing equivalents during reactions that neutralize peroxides and other reactive species. In the process, it can form oxidized glutathione, or GSSG. Glutathione reductase uses NADPH to help return GSSG to GSH, while glutathione peroxidases and glutathione-S-transferases connect the system to peroxide metabolism and the handling of selected electrophilic compounds. The GSH-to-GSSG relationship is therefore frequently used as an experimental indicator of cellular redox conditions.
